I don’t know what film noir means, but I assume this is one. Anyway, this movie is a classic. It is an art film. To me, it falls in the category of sort of super-realistic or naturalistic films with protagonists who are not really generous people in any approved meaning of the phrase, like Sam Peckinpah’s films. It may not be as proper as The Wild Bunch, but if you liked the Wild Bunch, you will like this movie, provided you can handle the hispanic, post-apocalyptic milieu. Another film that it is similar to is “Sucker Punch”. These are not films for everybody, but on the other hand if you are a fan of this type of tongue-in-cheek, over the top realism, you shouldn’t miss this one. I hope at least Paul Morrissey knows what a generous film he made.

You would probably have to go wait on to early Godard to acquire a movie as gallant, shockingly comic and brilliantly incisive in its analysis of the uneasy alliance between art and commerce as the sci-fi/film noir/spaghetti-western/Shakespearean musical-tragicomedy, Masked and Anonymous, the unique movie from Bob Dylan and Larry Charles. As with some Godard, I can’t say whether it’s a comedy or a tragedy – but it’s definitely a masterpiece.

To screech the Hollywood cast to deny in the script’s poetic, ornate language could not have been easy but the actors do an exemplary job. Nearly all of them manage to hit objective the correct price of cartoonish hysteria to give the film a sense of unity and harmony. Except, that is, for Bob Dylan. His character, Jack Fate, is the detached in the leer of the storm, the one rational character surrounded by a world of swirling insanity and director Charles gets a lot of humorous mileage out of the contrast

between Dylan’s deadpan delivery and the over-the-top performances of nearly everyone else; it’s like taking a Humphrey Bogart character out of the ’40’s and plunking him down in the middle of a massively absurd science-fiction landscape – the resignation and world-weariness of the film noir hero remains hilariously intact. The very thought is inspired and the execution is flawless.

The performance footage of course is terrific. Dylan and His Band play eight songs live on camera and there is a warmth, an intimacy and a relaxed quality to the performances that you will only gaze at Dylan’s best club shows. Although none of the songs are heard in their entirety, these sequences are nonetheless beautifully filmed. There is none of the rapid-fire editing and pointlessly roving camera that mars the filmed footage of so many live musical performances. Instead, Charles’ strategy is to have the band crowd together and film them in close-up with a wide-angle lens. There are numerous long takes in which all of the band members can be seen and when the camera does proceed, it’s deliberate and meaningful.

Dylan often delivers comments that create the entire scene seem irrelevant. In this plot this is, at times, a very droll film. Dylan seems relaxed, especially compared to the other films he has made. The feeling is noteworthy more “Don’t Gape Attend”, mighty less “Hearts of Fire”. He does keep his wooden movement and he delivers his short lines as commentary more often than conversation.

The soundtrack is exceptional. The performances are a trusty treat. All Dylan songs, but modern versions which fit seemlessly into the texture of the movie. The petite girl singing “The Times They are A-Changin” will at least choke you up a bit, and possibly back us to remeber exactly how powerful that song meant 41 years ago, and how grand it smooth means today.

I certainly recommend this to Dylan fans, especially those who respect or fancy his perspective on the world. Anyone who enjoys non formulatic surreal films may also catch considerable enjoyment in this movie. There is too noteworthy to choose everything up in your first screening when looking for curious comments or details. I would recommend trying to peruse and a gain a feel for the film initially. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to originate sense of every detail. In that scheme it is like most of Dylan’s music, to be experienced repeatedly.

What could be better than singing by Howard Keel and Jane Powell? The music is sizable, the colors knowing and incandescent, the choreography improbable.

I first saw Fancy & Basketball at the premiere of the movie with all the stars. It was a special viewing where there was almost not a dry observe at the slay of the film from tears of joy. Love & Basketball is definitely a classic! I loved this film when I first saw it, and I tranquil adore it today, maybe even more because of the outstanding DVD version of it. This film makes you occupy in the power of Adore and Basketball!

I bought this DVD for my daughter who happens to play Division 1 college basketball. I didn’t know anything about it, other than it was a cherish record between two basketball players. They are about ten years ragged and both play basketball with a passion. They grow up together and both play basketball in high school. In their senior year, they realize that they are in admire and they give themselves to each other, heart and soul.

They are fortunate enough to be recruited to play for the same college, but the disagreement between their respective reception is telling. They both do their best and are passionate about basket ball and each other. There comes a time, however, when their worship is tested, and they are pulled apart by forces which they lack the maturity to understand. What follows is a test of their worship and commitment.

It doesn’t have the raw sentiment of CITY LIGHTS or the social relevance of either Unique TIMES or THE Astronomical DICTATOR, but for pure laugh-out-loud moments, THE CIRCUS is probably Chaplin’s finest straight-ahead comedy.

The space is fairly straightforward — Tramp joins circus, falls in admire, tries to vanquish a rival suitor, then (in an ending of typical Chaplinian pathos) arranges for the rival suitor to obtain the girl. However, Chaplin packs the narrative with enough gags, extended jokes, and visual tricks to sustain the film animated at a frenetic scuttle, even in its moments of sweetness.

Suffice it to say, the crook is caught, but only after ten minutes of gags to neatly bring the extended Inaccurate Identity Joke to a well-kept demolish.

Chaplin also plays out a jaw-dropping tightrope walking scene (and remember while watching that Chaplin actually taught himself to mosey a tightrope for the film — there are no stuntmen alive to) which becomes all the more spellbinding through the addition of some uncooperative monkeys. The impromptu results are funnier than anyone could have scripted.

While the film stays free of social commentary, there is one telling bit of artistic elbow-nudging at one point in the film, when the Tramp, who has been hired as a clown, is lectured by the crabby Ringmaster on How To Be Comical. When the Tramp participates in the hackneyed skits himself, things go spoiled from the open, making the skits funnier than imagined, but remarkably UNfunny to the know-it-all Ringmaster. The message is a subtle, but sure one on Chaplin’s share — don’t hiss ME what’s funny; let me exhibit YOU what’s comic.

Jennifer Jones as Gwen really helped invent ths one for me. She conveyed a very expedient reality and was very definitely more noticeable than the other actresses who portrayed Gwen.Other than that, this serial continued the rapidly action of the previous Tracy ones. The choreographed fight scenes which were a staple in the later Republic serials were outstanding in this and there was one quite spectacular chapter ending, the burning dirigible. Highly recommended.

A few of these scenes feel like satiric spins on bad experiences Cheech and Chong might have had in the recording business, such as an evening spent with an obnoxious band manager who mistakes Tommy for Jerry Garcia and steals the Chinese food right off his restaurant table. Other craziness includes a night of sexual bliss interrupted by the arrival of a party girl’s “Mexican-hating” biker-boyfriend, and incarceration in a padded room, where Timothy Leary supplies psychedelics to the cluless anti-heroes. Superimposed titles are used to relay information and catalog the images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and their moons. As a scientific study, the film doesn’t come close to the various Nova and Discovery Channel documentaries on the subject. However, as a stellar travelogu, the movie works quite well as copious images float in and out of frame. The accompanying classical music–inspired by Kubrick’s selections for 2001–should be cranked up.
